Virginia Wesleyan holds off women's basketball's late run

Virginia Beach, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's women's basketball team mustered a late charge, but Old Dominion Athletic Conference rival Virginia Wesleyan held the Hornets off to take a 69-61 decision Saturday afternoon.

Abby Oguich led the Hornets (7-9, 4-5 ODAC) with 17 points and seven rebounds, while Maggie Quarles added 15 points and six boards.

Tied at the half, Virginia Wesleyan (5-11, 3-6) opened up a 17-point lead early in the fourth period. Lynchburg cut the lead down to four in the final minute of the game but couldn't convert on the offensive end to trim the gap any more.

Freshman guard Jayda Chambers added a season-high eight points to go with eight rebounds and four assists for Lynchburg.

The Hornets will hit the road again in ODAC play Wednesday, Jan. 22 with a trip to Ferrum for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
