Martin, Tenn. -- University of Lynchburg's equestrian team took on a pair of top-10 National Collegiate Equestrian Association squads over the weekend, dropping 8-2 decisions to No. 5 Texas A&M and No. 10 UT Martin.
Senior Taylor Herzog and sophomore Kelley McCormick won a pair of points each in the meets.
The Hornets started strong against Texas A&M Friday evening, taking a pair of points on the flat. Herzog earned Lynchburg's first point atop Tag, earning 78 points in her ride. McCormick finished the flat portion with a narrow win on Rafiki, grading out at 72.5 points to her opponent's 70 as Lynchburg trailed just 3-2 at day's end.
Texas A&M took control of the meet Saturday morning over fences, winning all five points. McCormick turned in the Hornets' best ride of the morning with a 75 on Finn, but she lost by a point.
In the weekend's second meet against the host Skyhawks, McCormick continued her strong weekend with an 80-point ride atop Dubay over fences. UT Martin won the other four points over fences.
Herzog won Lynchburg's last point of the day on Lynchburg's final ride on the flat, scoring 74 points on Rose to her opponents' 70.5. Freshman Fallyn Belcastro had Lynchburg's best-scoring flat ride of the meet, scoring 78 on Luigi but falling by a point.
Lynchburg's NCEA team finishes the fall portion of its schedule with a 3-5 record, all three wins coming in Eastern College Athletic Conference competition. The Hornets were ranked second among the NCEA's single-discipline programs in the association's most recent rankings earlier this week.
The Hornets' Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association schedule continues Sunday with a show at Virginia Tech. Lynchburg's team was reserve champion its last time in Blacksburg October 9.
