Box Score Rocky Mount, N.C. -- Sammi Sever matched her career-high with 27 points, Lizzie Davis added 18, and University of Lynchburg's women's basketball team came from behind in the final minute to top North Carolina Wesleyan, 63-61, in a non-conference battle of teams receiving top-25 votes.
Erin Green's layup at the 1-minute mark put the Hornets on top, and Lynchburg's defense turned in three stops in the final 60 seconds of play to cement the key road victory.
The Hornets started the game off hot with a 9-2 run, but the Battlin' Bishops fought back to take a 14-13 lead late in the first period. NCWC led 16-13 after 10 minutes.
The hosts continued to pressure on the offensive end, scoring 21 points in the second quarter to lead 37-32 at halftime. Sever scored 11 in the second to keep the Hornets in the game.
After halftime, Lynchburg started with a 6-0 run to retake the lead, and neither team led by more than two possessions for the rest of the game.
Lynchburg led for much of the second half, but NCWC retook the advantage on a Myesha Best 3-pointer with 4:05 remaining. Kate Kolb put the Hornets back on top on their next possession, but the hosts retook the lead on the other end of the floor, ensuring a dogfight into the final minute.
The Battlin' Bishops went up by three on a Kayrisma Harrison bucket with 2:45 remaining, and both defenses hunkered down. Green (eight points, eight rebounds) cut the deficit to 1 with a pair of free throws at the 1:28 mark and, the next Lynchburg possession, took a transition feed from Davis and converted to put the Hornets ahead.
Sever added the final point on a free throw with six seconds left to help seal the victory.
Lynchburg (3-1) shot just 23-for-64 from the field and 2-for-20 from 3-point land in the game, but the Hornet defense held NCWC to a 36.2 percent shooting clip and forced 18 Battlin' Bishop turnovers to even the playing field.
The Hornets will break for final exams and the Thanksgiving holiday before returning to play Wednesday, Dec. 1 in their Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener at home against Ferrum.
