Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- Sammi Sever dumped in a career-high 27 points, Erin Green logged a double-double, and University of Lynchburg's women's basketball team won its first game of the Allison Nichols era, 77-48, over Averett Friday evening inside Turner Gymnasium.
Brooke Vetter also reached double figures for the Hornets with a career-high 14 points.
The Cougars scored the opening basket of the game, but that's the only lead the visiting team enjoyed. Sever scored the Hornets' first two baskets, and after AU scored again, Sever scored again to give Lynchburg the lead for good.
Lynchburg led 14-8 after the first quarter and extended the lead to 37-26 by the half. Sever scored 20 in the half to top her career high, and she added seven more after halftime to increase the tally.
The Hornets took control of the game with a 13-4 run out of the half and never looked back.
Vetter went 3-for-3 from behind 3-point line, while Sever went 10-for-16 from the field in the win. Green added seven blocks and four steals to her total.
The win was the first as a Lynchburg Hornet for first-year head coach Allison Nichols, who took over the program in the offseason.
Lynchburg (1-0) will return to action Monday at Mary Washington with a 6 p.m. tip.
