Women's basketball hangs tough against No. 6 CNU

Box Score

Salem, Va. -- Three University of Lynchburg women's basketball players scored in double figures Wednesday, but it wasn't quite enough to unseat unbeaten and No. 6-ranked Christopher Newport. Lynchburg fell, 69-60, to the Captains on the opening day of the Susan Dunagan Holiday Classic at Roanoke College.

Lizzie Davis celebrated her 22nd birthday with a team-high 15 points to go with five rebounds and five assists, Kate Kolb added 14 points and six boards, and Olivia Harris tallied 10 points to lead the way for Lynchburg.

The teams started out methodically, with the Captains holding a 9-6 lead midway through the first period. Lynchburg tied the game at 9 on a Harris basket and Kolb's free throw on its next two possessions, and the game's pace picked up from there. The Captains led 17-15 at the quarter break.

CNU started the second with a 6-0 run and held onto that lead, entering the half with a 35-27 advantage.

The Captains' lead grew to 10 early in the third, but Lynchburg began to close the gap after that. Brooke Vetter's 3-pointer with 7:47 remaining the quarter sparked a 10-0 Hornets run, and sister Meredith Vetter tied the game at 39-39, knocking down a free throw at the 4:33 mark. CNU retook the lead, however, and entered the final 10 minutes with a 50-45 lead.

Still trailing by five under the 7-minute mark, Erin Green hit a free throw and cashed in a 3-pointer to cut the lead to one, but that's as close as the Hornets got.

CNU rattled off a 12-2 run over the next 3 minutes to seal the victory.

Kolb's 14 points were a season-high and marked the second-straight game the senior poured in double figures. Harris reached double-digit scoring for the third-straight contest, and Meredith Vetter's nine points were also a season-high in her first start of the campaign.

The Hornets (6-4) will wrap up the Susan Dunagan Holiday Classic Thursday at 7 p.m. with a tilt against Elizabethtown.
