Fitch thrusts men's basketball past Bridgewater

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg junior Alex Fitch turned in a career-best 20 points as the Hornets beat Bridgewater 91-74 on Saturday afternoon.

Fitch shot 4-6 (66.7%) from deep in the game and the team went 11-19 (57.9%) from beyond the arc.

T.C. Thacker sank the first deep ball for the Hornets to open up the game on an assist from Cam Savage. On the next possession, Thacker grabbed an offensive board and put it back up, giving Lynchburg an early 5-4 lead.

Already up five with 12:29 to go in the first, the Hornets unleashed a nine-point run. Jordan Parham had five points over those 2:10. Tharon Suggs and Carrington Young also added buckets to put Lynchburg up 26-12.

With just under three minutes left in the opening half, Fitch made a layup and started to heat up.

Actually, he got red hot.

Fitch splashed three-straight shots from beyond the arc, and gave Lynchburg a 53-25 lead.

With 35 seconds left, Fitch pulled up from the elbow and sank the jumper, reaching 13 points before the break. The Hornets went into halftime leading by 25 after their second 50-point half of the season.

Savage gave Lynchburg its biggest lead of the game with a 3-pointer on an assist from Isräel Lockamy. Savage ended the game with eight points while Lockamy added 11 points and three assists.

With 4:37 remaining, Bridgewater went on its longest scoring run, putting up eight-straight points and cutting the deficit to 16. Bridgewater's leading scorer, Zach Hatter, scored the final bucket of the run and ended the day with 19 points.

However, Lynchburg withstood the pressure and closed out the game after Fitch knocked down his fourth 3-pointer of the game with 1:15 left.

Kavon James converted a layup on an assist from Noah Bullock and put the Hornets past the 90-point threshold for the first time since beating Eastern Mennonite 95-87 in overtime on Jan. 23, 2021.

Bridgewater sank the final two shots of the game, but Lynchburg held on to win 91-74, its largest margin of victory over the Eagles since winning 97-63 in Bridgewater on Jan. 28, 2017.

Thacker joined Fitch and Lockamy in double-figures with 11 points and 12 boards. The graduate student secured his fifth double-double before halftime. Landon Sutton led the team with four assists.

Lynchburg (5-1, 2-0 ODAC) will not play another home game until Jan. 12. The Hornets begin a seven-game road trip with an out-of-conference matchup with Salisbury on Saturday, Dec. 11 at 4 p.m.
