Women's basketball holds off Roanoke for OT win

Box Score

Salem, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's women's basketball team rallied in overtime to secure a 63-57 road victory at Old Dominion Athletic Conference rival Roanoke Wednesday night.

Juniors Lizzie Davis and Abby Oguich led the Hornets in the scoring department, tallying 16 and 14 points, respectively. Oguich snagged 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the 2021 campaign.

The Hornets (6-1, 5-1 ODAC) raced out to an 18-5 lead in the first quarter and held onto that 13-point advantage heading into halftime.

Roanoke (8-2, 5-2) began to claw back after the break, but Lynchburg held a 14-point lead after Davis' bucket with 7:22 left in the game.

It was Lynchburg's last points of regulation. RC finished the fourth period on a 14-0 run, holding the Hornets to an 0-for-5 ledger from the field and forcing nine turnovers in that span.

Neither team could find the basket at overtime's start until freshman guard Taylor Gantt's free throw went in with 2:26 to play, ending the 10-minute scoring drought for Lynchburg.

Roanoke scored on its ensuing possession to take its only lead of the game, but the Hornets answered right back. Gantt made the front end of a set of free throws, and Oguich grabbed the rebound off the freshman's second-shot miss and stuck it back in, drawing the foul and sinking the free throw to complete the three-point play. The Hornets added three free throws in the final 2 minutes and played solid defense to seal the victory.

Erin Green added seven points, 14 rebounds, and three blocks for Lynchburg, while Kate Kolb chipped in eight points and eight boards in just 13 minutes played.

The win catapults the Hornets into third place in the ODAC standings. The league's women's basketball teams wrap up the regular season this weekend.

It was the first of three games over a four-day stretch for Lynchburg, which heads to crosstown rival Randolph Thursday for a 7 p.m. tip before welcoming Washington and Lee to Turner Gym at 1 p.m. Saturday for a non-conference game.
