Box Score Newport News, Va. -- The 11th-ranked Captains of Christopher Newport handed University of Lynchburg's men's lacrosse team its first loss of the 2021 season thanks to an overtime goal from Alex Brendes.
The CNU sophomore scored the golden goal with 3:22 remaining in the OT period.
Second-ranked Lynchburg (5-1) worked hard to get the game into overtime. After the Hornets scored an early two goals, the host Captains managed five of the next six scores to head into halftime with a 5-3 advantage.
Lynchburg quickly tied the game at 5-5 with third-quarter goals by Brooks Poli and Brett Rogers, and the teams were again deadlocked much of the second half.
CNU (6-0) rallied midway through the fourth on back-to-back goals by Brady Altobello for a 9-7 advantage. The game stayed that way until the waning minutes. With 1:40 to play, Lynchburg's Trammel Robinson scored, unassisted, to cut the deficit to a single goal, and after a CNU turnover inside a minute to play, the Hornets' Dylan Wolfe scored to tie the game at 9-9.
Lynchburg had a shot before the buzzer at regulation and won the face-off to start OT, but CNU forced a turnover and scored on the Captains' first possession to win the game.
Rogers scored twice for the Hornets -- the only multiple-goal scorer for the visitors on the day -- while Kyle Lewis added a goal and two assists. Long-stick midfielder Chris Darminio chipped in four caused turnovers and five ground balls. Face-off man Quintin Ricci went 13-for-21 at the X and had a team-high nine ground balls.
The two teams will meet again Friday, March 26, this time on Lynchburg's Shellenberger Field. Start time is set for 7 p.m.
