Women's basketball moves by E&H into ODAC semifinal

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- Lizzie Davis and Abby Oguich each notched double-doubles as University of Lynchburg's women's basketball team held off a late charge to advance in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament with a 71-64 quarterfinal win over Emory & Henry Saturday evening.

Davis racked up a game-high 18 points and 10 assists to go with six rebounds to lead the way for second-seeded Lynchburg (9-1). Oguich collected 17 points and 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season.

No. 7-seed Emory & Henry (6-8) started off the game with some hot 3-point shooting and led 13-7 after Taylor Gilbert knocked down her second long-range score. Lynchburg battled back to take its first lead at 15-14, but the Wasps finished the first on an 11-2 run for an eight-point lead.

The momentum quickly swung Lynchburg's way in the second, as a pair of Davis free throws kicked off a quarter in which the Hornets outscored their opponents, 18-5. Lynchburg took a 35-30 lead into halftime.

Lynchburg clung onto the lead throughout the third and early in the fourth until the Wasps scored three straight baskets to tie the game at 59 with 6:48 remaining. After a wave of wasted possessions by both teams, the Hornets took the lead for good on Oguich's layup with 4:28 left to play.

Emory & Henry kept the game within two possessions until the waning seconds, but Lynchburg's defense denied the Wasps a look at the lead, and a pair of Davis free throws with 1.4 seconds remaining iced the win for Lynchburg.

The win extended Lynchburg's winning streak to nine games and propels the Hornets into the conference semifinals for the first time since 2017.

The ODAC bracket will now bring third-seeded Washington and Lee to the Hill City on Tuesday, March 9 for a semifinal matchup. Lynchburg took a non-conference regular-season meeting between the two teams, 75-59, on February 27. Tuesday's game time is yet to be determined.
