No. 10 men's lacrosse topples top-ranked Salisbury

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- Kyle Lewis, Riley Mitchell, and Brett Rogers each scored twice to lead the No. 10-ranked University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team to a 10-8 comeback victory over No. 1 Salisbury Saturday afternoon on Shellenberger Field.

The Hornets fell behind in the early going and trailed 4-1 early in the second quarter.

Lynchburg climbed back into the game late in the second quarter, spurred by a face-off victory and ensuing goal by graduate student Quintin Ricci with just under 5 minutes left in the first half. Rogers found Lewis in front of the goal with 1:17 left until halftime, and the junior finished the play to bring the deficit to 4-3 at half.

After Salisbury (0-1) scored early in the third, the Hornets ripped off a string of three straight goals from Trammel Robinson, Lewis, and Mitchell to take their first lead with 4:36 remaining in the third. SU tied the game, and the teams headed to the fourth with the score tied, 6-6.

Rogers opened the fourth with his first goal of the game, assisted by Brooks Poli, to put Lynchburg (3-0) back in the lead. SU tied the game at 7 with 12:56 to play, but the Hornets countered right back after Ricci won the face-off, and senior midfielder Tye Mitchell found a gap in the defense and raced through it to score and extend the lead to two.

Salisbury cut the Hornet lead back to 1, but Jack Speers scored on a Lewis assist with 6:11 to go to double the cushion. Solid Lynchburg defending in the waning minutes, including caused turnovers by Chris Darminio and Jack Albright on back-to-back possessions, helped the Hornets seal the win.

Darminio caused three turnovers on the day and snagged a pair of ground balls. Patrick Moore was solid in goal for the Hornets, totaling 10 saves, seven ground balls, and a caused turnover.

The Lynchburg win ended a six-game losing streak against Salisbury dating back to 2015.
