Women's basketball advances to ODAC championship game

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- Lizzie Davis' 22 points led three University of Lynchburg women's basketball players in double figures as the Hornets finished strong in an 87-75 win over Washington and Lee in Tuesday evening's Old Dominion Athletic Conference semifinals.

The second-seeded Hornets will play host to No. 4 seed Roanoke College Thursday afternoon at 4 to determine the 2021 conference champion.

Maggie Quarles scored 20 points, going 4-for-6 from 3-point territory, and added four rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Erin Green chipped in 16 points, six boards, and two blocks, and Davis contributed five rebounds, four assists, and two blocks in addition to her team-high point total.

The Hornets (10-1) fell behind 5-0 in the early going but used an 8-0 run on a pair of Quarles 3s. Lynchburg maintained a narrow lead throughout the first half and went into the break ahead 39-37.

W&L tied the game at 43 on Megan Horn's layup with 6:05 left in the third, but a Davis free throw on the next possession put Lynchburg back in the lead, and the Hornets never again relinquished it.

Taylor Gantt's 3-pointer with 3:16 remaining in the game gave the Hornets their largest lead at 74-60, and Lynchburg went 8-for-12 from the field and 13-for-17 from the free throw stripe in the fourth quarter to help ice the win.

Horn's 23 points led all scorers for the Generals.

The Hornets win puts Lynchburg back in the ODAC title game for the first time since 2017, and Thursday's championship will be the first-ever meeting between the Hornets and their rivals, Roanoke, with the league title on the line.
