Waco, Texas -- University of Lynchburg's equestrian team took home a reserve champion finish Saturday at the National Collegiate Equestrian Association's Single Discipline championships by means of a 6-2 championship-meet defeat at the hands of top-seeded Sweet Briar at the Extraco Events Center.
Freshmen Lilly Fraley and Kelley McCormick earned the points for Lynchburg, one each on the flat and over fences.
Fraley got the scoring started for the Hornets, riding Lamar to a 209-point total over fences to best her Vixens opponent. Despite a 236-point ride from sophomore Lori Ohannessian and 215 points from freshman Jacqi Needle, SBC took the other three fences points to assume control of the meet.
On the flat, McCormick teamed up with Oki for a 225-point ride to lay claim to Lynchburg's second point.
Taylor Herzog and Caroline Waters also rode for the Hornets at the meet.
The national championship appearance was the first for Lynchburg's NCEA program, which is in its second season in the format in 2021. This was the first year in which a national championship was conducted for single-discipline equestrian programs.
