Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- Junior Ryan Kenney became the 13th player in program history to score seven goals in a game Sunday as the No. 5-ranked University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team made a statement with a 23-8 shellacking of No. 18 Colorado College on Shellenberger Field.
Kenney notched a hat trick in the first half as the Hornets raced out to a 10-6 lead, and the Hingham, Mass., native added three more goals in the third quarter and scored again in the fourth to reach his career-high. He also assisted a fourth-quarter goal.
Lynchburg pulled ahead in the early going and led 6-2 early in the second period before the Tigers stormed back. Colorado College scored four unanswered goals to tie the game at 6-6 with 9:49 left in the second, but it was all Lynchburg from there. Just 20 seconds after losing the lead, Kenney put the Hornets back ahead with the first of four straight Lynchburg goals to end the half.
The Hornets outscored CC 6- 1 in the third to put the game out of reach, and seven different Lynchburg players scored in the fourth to put a bow on the win.
Graduate student Colin Dean amassed four goals and an assist in the game, sophomore Dylan Wolfe chipped in two goals and an assist, and freshman Jake Rust scored twice in his first collegiate start. Junior Kyle Lewis added a goal and four assists, and junior Brett Rogers tallied a goal and three helpers.
The Hornets' long-stick midfielders, sophomore Chris Darminio (five ground balls, one caused turnover) and junior Marshall Rodegast (three ground balls, two caused turnovers) led the Lynchburg defense.
Lynchburg (13-2) will close out the regular season Saturday at 7 p.m. against Old Dominion Athletic Conference rival and No. 17-ranked Hampden-Sydney at home on Shellenberger Field.
