No. 4 men's lacrosse comes back to tame Tigers

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- Colin Dean scored four goals -- all in the fourth quarter -- Ryan Kenney added three goals and an assist, and the No. 4-ranked University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team rallied for an 11-9 come-from-behind win over No. 16 Hampden-Sydney Saturday night on Shellenberger Field.

The Hornets outscored Hampden-Sydney 7-3 in the fourth.

Lynchburg got out to an early lead on Riley Mitchell's goal in the first minute of the contest. Hampden-Sydney later tied the game at 1-1, but the Hornets retook the lead with 2:08 in the first on Kenney's first goal and led 2-1 after one quarter.

After H-SC tied the game again, Kenney put the Hornets back in front at the 11:47 mark, but the Tigers finished the first half with three straight goals to lead 5-3 at halftime.

The Hornets cut the deficit to one on Tyler Gallagher's goal, but the Tigers scored two straight to lead 7-4 with 12:02 left in the game.

Then, Dean took over. The graduate student scored his first goal with 10:05 remaining to slice the lead to two, and Kenney scored 18 seconds later to bring it to 7-6. After an H-SC goal, Dean scored three straight at the 6:26, 4:18, and 3:19 marks to give Lynchburg its first lead since midway through the second period.

Hampden-Sydney tied the game at 9 on a Grayson Ackaway goal with 3:01 to play, but Brett Rogers tiptoed through the Tiger defense an scored the eventual game-winner just in front of the crease with 2:26 left on the clock.

The Hornets added an insurance goal with 32 seconds to play as Chris Darminio took a Kenney feed and found nylon.

Lynchburg's transition defense again caused its opponents problems; H-SC converted just 22 of 28 clears. The Hornets also locked down on all three of the Tigers' man-up opportunities and out-shot their rivals, 44-37. Patrick Moore made 11 saves in net.

The Hornets will carry the No. 2 seed into the upcoming Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament and will play the winner of Hampden-Sydney and tomorrow's sixth versus seventh game on Thursday at home. The start time will be announced at a later time.
