Rustburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's equestrian team won its second National Collegiate Equestrian Association meet of the season Sunday, topping Bridgewater, 5-3, at the Liberty Mountain Equestrian Center.
The Hornets won on their final ride of the meet for the second-consecutive outing, this time on Kelley McCormick's 84-point ride with Rain over fences. McCormick's ride earned her most outstanding performer over fences honors, and the sophomore from Chester, N.H. was Lynchburg's high-point rider of the day as well after a score of 69.5 in her turn on the flat.
That opening ride, also atop Rain, won the Hornets their first point of the day, and freshman Fallyn Belcastro also won a Lynchburg point on the flat with a 66.5-point ride on Ed.
Bridgewater won the other two points on the flat as the meet was tied, 2-2, at the midway point with the Eagles leading on raw points, 269-266.5.
Lynchburg quickly retook the lead in the first rides over fences, thanks to Jacqi Needle's 68 points atop Russ, but BC's Caroline Warren won a point as well to even the score once again.
The Hornets took the final two points, the first one coming by way of freshman Emma Schweizer's 82 points with Cruz and the clincher from McCormick and Rain.
Lynchburg moved to 2-0 on the young NCEA season, the first two NCEA victories in the program's history, and the Hornets will put that unblemished record to the test October 22-23 in Auburn, Ala. with meets against Auburn and Fresno State, respectively.
In the meantime, the Lynchburg equestrian team will pivot to Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association competition, opening that portion of the schedule Saturday, Oct. 9 at the University of Virginia IHSA show.
