Men's basketball sees win streak end at three

Box Score

Virginia Beach, Va. -- University of Lynchburg men's basketball fell to Virginia Wesleyan on Friday evening 74-61, snapping a three-game winning streak.

T.C. Thacker scored Lynchburg's first points of the evening thanks to an assist from Tharon Suggs, but the Hornets were behind in the early going.

After a Carrington Young scored from downtown, Thacker briefly put his team ahead with his signature turnaround jumper off one foot in the paint and made a free throw to complete the conventional 3-point play. However, the Marlins responded with a 12-0 run featuring four different scorers and built a 21-12 lead with 9:42 to go in the first.

Alex Fitch and Noah Bullock both knocked down 3-pointers to halt Va. Wesleyan's run.

Thacker grabbed nine rebounds and scored 10 points in the first, but VWU ripped off another 12-0 run to end the opening half and took a 16-point lead into the locker room.

Kavon James opened the second half with a 3-pointer taking an assist from Thacker. James added a layup at the 15:37 mark, but the Hornets found themselves down 52-34.

Lynchburg attempted a comeback beginning with a jumper from Trey Pittman. The Hornets managed to cut the deficit to 10 points with a 12-5 run after five points from Pittman, four from Isräel Lockamy, and a 3 from Suggs. Lockamy ended the game in double figures for the third-straight game. The graduate student from Wake Forest, N.C. went 4-9 (44%) from the floor and made all four free throws for 13 points.

Thacker joined Lockamy in double digits as he led his squad with 15 points and 16 rebounds for his 13th double-double of the season. Suggs added eight points and eight rebounds while Carrington Young orchestrated with three assists.

Lynchburg was unable to keep pace with the Marlins down the stretch as VWU enjoyed 21 points from Tim Jones and held on for the win.

Tharon Suggs made his 100th field goal of the season during the loss and T.C. Thacker increased his career-rebounding total to 784. Thacker recently moved into second place on the all-time program rebounding list. He also leads the Old Dominion Athletic Conference with 193 boards on the season. The graduate student from Madison Heights, Va. helped his team outrebound Va. Wesleyan 39-30. Thacker had eight of Lynchburg's 16 offensive boards.

The Hornets (11-6, 5-3 ODAC) regroup on Tuesday, Feb. 1 at home against Hampden-Sydney. The CODE RED game begins at 7 p.m.
