Green's buzzer-beater ices women's basketball's OT win

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- Erin Green lofted the ball high off the backboard and through the basket as time expired to lift University of Lynchburg's women's basketball team over Old Dominion Athletic Conference rival Guilford, 71-70 in overtime, Saturday, sending Turner Gym into a frenzied celebration.

The Hornets, who trailed for much of the game, took a 66-63 lead with 44 seconds left in regulation on Olivia Harris' 3-pointer, but GC's Lindsay Gauldin nailed a 3 with 16 seconds to go to push the game into overtime.

Green's 3-pointer put the Hornets ahead in OT with 1:51 to go, but the Quakers retook an advantage with 31 seconds to play and looked to have the game won, going to the free-throw line with 2 seconds remaining. Guilford missed both free throws, however, and Green corralled the rebound as Lynchburg called timeout with 1.7 seconds on the clock. Out of the timeout, Lizzie Davis' inbound pass found Green in the paint, and the senior heaved up the game-winner.

The Quakers hit Lynchburg in the face in the early going, leaping out to a 22-12 lead after one quarter. The Hornets stormed back to cut the lead to 37-36 by halftime, but Guilford held onto a narrow lead thereafter; Lizzie Davis finally brought the Hornets even at 53-53 with the first basket of the fourth.

Davis' layup with 6:44 to play gave Lynchburg its first lead, and the teams traded baskets (and defensive stops) until the waning minutes.

Davis finished with 21 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and four steals for the Hornets, while Harris chipped in 14 points off the bench. Green had 11 points, nine boards, and three blocks, and Kate Kolb and Brooke Vetter added nine points apiece.

Guilford's Gauldin led all scorers with 25 points.

The Hornets (10-7, 6-4 ODAC) will hit the road Monday for more ODAC competition with a 7 p.m. tip at Shenandoah.
