Women's basketball drops ODAC opener at Roanoke

Box Score

Salem, Va. -- Despite a season-best 10 points from freshman Kayla Terry in her first collegiate start, University of Lynchburg's women's basketball team fell in its 2022-23 Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener, 61-45, at Roanoke Wednesday evening.

Terry led the way with her 10-point, four-rebound effort, while Macey Mullins added eight points and two steals for the Hornets. Ashley Vandergrift scored seven points off the bench.

Lynchburg opened the game on a 7-0 run after Mullins tallied a jumper and a free throw and Terry knocked down a 3-pointer all in the game's first 3 minutes. Roanoke climbed back in, however, and Lynchburg led by just two, 16-14, after the first quarter. The teams remained tightly contested in the second and headed into halftime with Roanoke leading, 28-26. Defense kept the Hornets in it; Lynchburg forced RC to commit 14 turnovers before halftime.

The Maroons ratcheted up their defense in the second half, holding the Hornets to just a 2-for-14 clip from the field in the third while extending the Roanoke lead to 42-30 entering the final quarter. RC held serve in the fourth, outscoring Lynchburg by a 19-15 margin to secure victory in both teams' conference opener.

Roanoke won the battle against the young Lynchburg team on the glass, claiming a 59-41 tally on the boards. The Maroons' 23 offensive rebounds resulted in 13 second-chance points.

Lynchburg (1-2, 0-1 ODAC) will take a break from conference play over the weekend, heading to Atlanta, Ga. for games with Piedmont and No. 15-ranked Mary Hardin-Baylor at Emory University's Tip Off Classic.
