Felton, Del. -- University of Lynchburg's top-ranked National Collegiate Equestrian Association team pulled off a nailbiter of a victory on the road Saturday, topping host and No. 10-ranked Delaware State in a raw-score tiebreak after finishing tied, 5-5, with the host Hornets. Lynchburg won the tiebreak narrowly, 834-829.
Lynchburg started off slowly over fences, but sophomore Emma Schweizer got the visitors on the board with a career-best 92-point ride on Kal. Freshman MacKenna Moss was the last ride of the day over fences, and she turned in 86 on Tillie to win a second point for Lynchburg.
Flat went better for the Hornets as they made up the difference. Freshman Abby Zemp led off the rides with 79 atop Finnegan, a score that held up to win by six, and Lucy Metzler later rode to 87 points on Maverick for another Lynchburg win. Again down to the final ride of the day for Lynchburg, Schweizer came through big. The reigning Eastern College Athletic Conference flat rider of the week scored 76 on Ian to best her DSU opponent by three and provide the difference for Lynchburg to win on the raw-score tiebreak.
All five of Lynchburg's rides over fences were scored at 80 points or better, and the Hornets scored 76 or more on each of their five flat rides.
The meet concluded Lynchburg's fall schedule. The Hornets, who have been ranked atop the NCEA's single-discipline rankings all season after winning the 2022 national championship in the spring, boast a 4-2 record (3-0 against NCEA single-discipline competition) this season.
