Box Score Arlington, Va. -- University of Lynchburg men's basketball took control late in the second half as they beat Amherst, 62-57, to close out their trip to the Pablo Coto Tip-Off Tournament.
Lynchburg scored 19 points off of 20 Mammoth turnovers on their way to the first win of the season. Kavon James scored a career-high 15 points to lead the way for Lynchburg, and Piercen Young contributed 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
In the first half, eight Hornets found their way into the scoring column, led by Jordan Parham's six. The Hornets trailed, 27-23, at the half.
The game remained close in the early minutes of the second half, but the Mammoths looked to pull away as they achieved their largest lead of the game with a nine-point advantage with 10:29 left.
Lynchburg quickly erased the lead. Cole Murphy knocked down two free throws with 6:35 remaining to give the Hornets a 48-47 lead. Lynchburg was 10-for-12 from the free-throw line in the second half.
The Hornets (1-3) look to continue their success Wednesday with a trip to NCAA Division I member Queens in Charlotte, N.C.
