Women's basketball drops home-opener to Randolph

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's women's basketball team debuted at home in 2022-23 Wednesday night in a 56-49 Old Dominion Athletic Conference loss to crosstown rival Randolph.

Kayla Sledge led the Hornets with 11 points, the second time this season the freshman has reached double figures, and Olivia Harris added nine, but it wasn't enough to get Lynchburg in the win column.

Harris drilled a 3-pointer on Lynchburg's opening possession, giving the host team a 3-2 lead, but that was the only time the Hornets led all night. Lynchburg scored just 16 points in the first half, trailing 30-16 at the break.

Randolph held a 43-27 advantage headed into the fourth, but Lynchburg stormed back in the late going. Freshman Macey Mullins knocked down a pair of last-quarter 3s to bring Lynchburg back into the game, but Randolph's steady free-throw shooting kept the status quo. The WildCats were 11-for-14 from the line in the final quarter, led by Yanessa Cabrera's 5-for-6 performance. Cabrera finished with a game-high 17 points.

Mullins tallied up eight points, all in the final period, for Lynchburg. Sledge led Lynchburg on the glass with six rebounds, and Maddie Nimmo tallied up three points, four assists, and three steals in her collegiate debut, returning from injury.

The loss snapped Lynchburg's longest win streak against a single opponent, a 21-gamer against Randolph that dated back to February of 2009. The Hornets (1-5, 0-2 ODAC) will look to snap a losing streak of their own Saturday against Shenandoah; Lynchburg has lost its last two meetings with the visitors, who will tip in Turner Gymnasium at 2 p.m.
