Box Score Arlington, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's women's basketball team began the 2022-23 season Tuesday on the road with a 72-49 loss at Marymount.
Olivia Harris led the way for the Hornets with 13 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, and Bree Spainhour contributed 10 points off the bench. Jayda Chambers chipped in six points and a team-best 10 rebounds as well.
Lynchburg started out with an early lead after Harris knocked down a 3 on the Hornets' second possession, and the visitors led 10-9 at the media timeout midway through the first period. After the breather, though, Marymount closed the quarter on an 8-2 run. The Saints never looked back.
Harris and Spainhour scored five points each in the second quarter, but the Hornets trailed 34-24 at the half. Lynchburg managed to cut the lead to eight after an and-1 play by Spainhour with 7:31 left in the third, but the Hornets never got back within single digits.
Lynchburg shot just 32.7 percent from the field in the game and battled the turnover bug, handing it over 26 times in the ballgame. The Hornets did get 20 points off the bench, 10 of which were Spainhour's.
The Hornets (0-1) will continue their season-opening roadtrip Saturday at William Peace with a 2 p.m. tip.
