Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- Trey Pittman's career night was not quite enough to lead University of Lynchburg's men's basketball team to victory Saturday, as the Hornets fell, 84-76, to Virginia Wesleyan in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play.
Pittman poured in a collegiate-best 24 points, shooting 11-for-15 from the field in the process, to lead four Hornets in double-figure scoring. Elijah Davis, Miles Taylor, and Piercen Young added 11 points apiece for Lynchburg's cause.
The Hornets jumped out ahead in the early going, scoring the game's first four points on buckets by Davis and Pittman, but Virginia Wesleyan quickly found its footing as well. The Marlins rushed back to take a 10-8 lead just over 4 minutes into the game, and VWU expanded the lead to as many as 14 points before halftime. Virginia Wesleyan led 46-37 at the break after Cuddah Savage beat the buzzer with a Lynchburg layup.
The second half was a different story. Lynchburg opened the second on 9-2 run to cut the deficit to one possession, and the Hornets took their first lead since the opening minutes on a Taylor jumper with 16:38 to play.
The teams traded the lead four times in the second half before Virginia Wesleyan delivered the knockout run late, kicked off by Jordan Crump's go-ahead 3-pointer with 6:04 remaining. That 3 sparked a 10-0 Marlins run, and VWU held on in the waning minutes to win the game. Crump led the Marlins with 21 points and seven rebounds.
Lynchburg (2-5, 1-2 ODAC) will look to get back in the win column Wednesday with another home conference affair; Hampden-Sydney tips off with the Hornets at 7 p.m. on Wayne Proffitt Court.
