Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's women's basketball team erased a double-figure deficit but could not put the game away, closing 2022 with a 61-57 loss to North Carolina Wesleyan at home Saturday afternoon.
Macey Mullins led the Hornets with 17 points, and Maddie Nimmo contributed a career-high 13 points for Lynchburg.
The Hornets led 13-11 after a period of play, taking the lead on Ashley Vandergrift's late 3-pointer, but the second quarter was all Battling Bishops. NCWU took a one-point lead with 7:06 before halftime, kicking off a 17-2 run to lead by nine at the half, 32-23.
Lynchburg quickly erased the lead with an 8-0 run to open the third, and the game was close from there on out. Mullins hit a 3 at the 6:40 mark in the penultimate period to give the Hornets the lead back. The visitors erased it in the fourth with another run, this time a 9-1 rally, and held on for the victory.
Mullins opened the gates to 3-point city, going 5-for-5 from deep, and added four steals and three assists. Nimmo added seven rebounds, four steals, and three assists to her line as well.
The Hornets will reopen the season in 2023 on Wednesday with a 7 p.m. tip against Guilford.
