Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- Sarah Johnson's 15-point evening led University of Lynchburg's women's basketball team to its first Old Dominion Athletic Conference win of the season, an 84-33 thrashing of Hollins Wednesday on the road.
Johnson scored her game-best 15 points in just 16 minutes on the floor, and she added four rebounds and a block for good measure.
After falling behind 6-2 in the game's early going, the Hornets finished the first period on a 16-0 run to take control of the game. Lynchburg extended the run to 31-0 well into the second quarter before Hollins made a layup with 2:19 before halftime.
The Hornets led 39-11 at the break on Taylor Gantt's layup as time expired. Johnson scored eight of her points in the second period. Lynchburg increased its lead in the second half, shooting a scalding 8-for-15 from 3-point range in the final two quarters of the rout.
A quintet of Hornets freshmen – Brooke Cason, Maddie Nimmo, Kayla Sledge, Kayla Terry, and Ashley Vandergrift – contributed eight points apiece to the Lynchburg cause, and Sledge grabbed a team-best eight rebounds as well. Another freshman, Bree Spainhour, finished with seven points, six rebounds, and four assists, and Macey Mullins, yet another first-year, tallied five points, five assists, four rebounds, and four steals.
Moriah Hill had 13 points to lead the way for Hollins.
Lynchburg (2-7, 1-3 ODAC) has won 16 straight against HU and snapped a six-game losing skid with Wednesday's win. The Hornets will now look for consecutive victories next time out, Thursday, Dec. 15 in another ODAC matchup at Bridgewater.
