Men's basketball falls on Senior Day

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg men's basketball lost to Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday, 67-62.

Prior to the game, Lynchburg recognized the careers of Tharon Suggs, Isräel Lockamy, Dow Dunton, Carrington Young, and T.C. Thacker. The group won 70 games dating back to Lockamy's and Thacker's freshman year in 2017-18.

Miles Taylor, a sophomore, scored the inaugural points for the Hornets after the Senior Day celebration.

Young and Dunton converted layups and built an early 6-2 lead. Almost midway through the first, Lynchburg enjoyed an 18-14 lead courtesy of two more layups from Dunton. The senior ended the first half with eight points and 11 rebounds.

VWU battled back and held a 26-22 lead with 3:37 to play in the opener. Dunton and Lockamy retied the game with back-to-back makes.

The Marlins were looking to go into halftime with a three-point lead. However, Taylor tipped in a shot on a Lockamy-assist from out of bounds before the buzzer and Lynchburg only trailed by one.

Taylor converted two free throws out the break and Lynchburg retook the lead. The Marlins quickly hopped back in front to the tune of seven-straight points. By the 5:25 mark, VWU held its largest lead, 57-44.

Lockamy scored nine of his team-high 19 points in the second and Dunton ended with a 10-point, 18-rebound double-double, but Lynchburg was unable to catch the Marlins and lost 67-62.

Dunton's 18 boards are a career-high and the most by a Lynchburg player this season.

The Hornets (14-11, 8-8) secured their 11th-straight winning season and have been .500 or better in the conference since 2011-12 as well. They earned the sixth seed in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament and will rematch the Marlins on Thursday, Feb. 24 in the quarterfinals. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. at the Salem Civic Center.
