Box Score Virginia Beach, Va. -- Brooke Vetter's go-ahead free throw with 37 seconds left proved the difference as University of Lynchburg's women's basketball team closed the regular season with a 66-65 victory over Virginia Wesleyan on the road Saturday.
Lizzie Davis scored a game-high 23 points and distributed nine assists for the Hornets, and Erin Green (15 points) and Olivia Harris (13) both reached double figures for Lynchburg.
The Hornets started the game hot with a 13-2 run over the first 6:12, capped by a Davis jumper. VWU responded with a 15-1 run of its own, however, to take a three-point lead into the first period break.
Lynchburg battled back to take a 22-20 lead on back-to-back Davis buckets midway through the second, and the Hornets carried a 32-27 advantage into halftime.
The Hornets held onto that lead for the first 8 minutes of the third, but VWU came up with a run late in the period and tied the game at 48 with 2:00 left in the third. A Harris 3 put the Hornets back in front, however, and Lynchburg led 54-50 headed into the final quarter.
VWU tied the game at 59 on a pair of Adaje Williams free throws with 6:24 to play, and the teams were never again more than two possessions apart. The Marlins took a 63-59 lead just under the 5-minute mark, but a Green jumper with 4:06 remaining retied the score. Davis knocked down a pair of free throws with 3:28 to play for a two-point advantage, but the Hornets went cold after that. Lynchburg missed its final six field-goal attempts of the game as the clock crept under a minute with the score tied, 65-65.
After Green missed a shot with 39 seconds to play, Vetter secured the offensive rebound and drew a foul. She missed the front end of the free throws, but the second was true and proved the difference. Green blocked a Marlins attempt on their final possession, the desperation 3 at the buzzer didn't fall for VWU.
Lynchburg (15-10, 11-7 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) will carry the No. 6 seed into this week's conference tournament and will take on the to-be-determined No. 3 seed Friday night at 8 in the tournament quarterfinal round.
