Women's basketball storms back to top Hollins

Box Score

Roanoke, Va. -- Kate Kolb's go-ahead layup with 5 seconds remaining vaulted University of Lynchburg's women's basketball team to a key Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory Wednesday night on the road, helping the Hornets top Hollins, 54-53.

Kolb's bucket capped off a 7-0 Lynchburg run to end the game and gave the Hornets their first lead since the midway point in the first period. The reigning ODAC player of the week tallied a game-high 17 points and added 13 rebounds.

The game was back and forth in the early going, Lynchburg taking a 7-4 lead 4 minutes in on Olivia Harris' 3-pointer. Hollins pushed back with a 7-0 run and ended the quarter with a two-point lead, 11-9.

HU maintained the lead into the second until the Hornets tied the game at 17-17 as the clock crept toward halftime. Lynchburg could not manage to retake the lead, however, and Hollins took a 31-27 advantage into intermission.

Hollins extended its lead early in the third, reaching its largest lead of seven, 34-27, just 34 seconds into the period before Lynchburg ended the run. The Hornets tied the game at 42 with 4:04 remaining in the third after a pair of Lizzie Davis free throws.

The Hornets relinquished the lead on the next trip down the floor, and Hollins carried a narrow advantage into the quarter break and through to the game's waning minutes. Trailing by six with 2:28 left on the clock, Kolb drew a foul and knocked down both free throws to start the game-ending run.

Lynchburg's defense forced a shot clock violation on the opposite end, and then Harris knocked down a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to one with 1:39 remaining. Defensive stops by both teams in the late going set up Kolb's go-ahead score.

Following a timeout, Hollins managed a contested look in the lane that rolled off the rim, cementing the Hornets' narrow victory.

Harris tacked on 14 points off the bench for the Hornets, while Erin Green contributed seven points, eight rebounds, and three blocks.

Lynchburg improves to 11-8 overall, 7-5 in ODAC play with the win. The Hornets extended their ongoing win streak over Hollins to 14 games. The Hornets will look to make it two victories in a row Saturday at 2 p.m. at home against Randolph-Macon.
