Women's basketball takes down R-MC

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg senior Lizzie Davis used late-game heroics to push the Hornets past Randolph-Macon, 54-51, Saturday afternoon.

Davis scored 11 points including the go-ahead score while also adding five assists.

Kate Kolb, Lynchburg's leading scorer with 14 points, opened the game with a layup. Davis and Erin Green knocked down 3-pointers in the first quarter as the Hornets built a 15-11 lead after 10 minutes of play.

Olivia Harris kickstarted Lynchburg's largest scoring run of the game by knocking down a shot from beyond the arc with 2:13 left in the opening half. Harris added a layup during the nine-point run as did Green and Davis, and the Hornets took a 36-28 advantage into the locker room. Lynchburg shot 62.5% (10-16) in the second quarter.

R-MC stormed back in the third and trailed by one before the fourth. R-MC's Aimee DeBell poured in half of her 16 points during the third stanza.

The Yellow Jackets jumped ahead in the final period and were up by as many as five points with 7:23 to play. Kolb tied the game back up 4:05 later with a layup on an assist from Davis.

After the Yellow Jackets scored with 2:47 left, Green converted a pair of free throws to re-tie the game. Green ended the afternoon with 13 points and six blocks. She enjoyed her sixth game of the season with five or more denials.

Davis made sure the game did not slip away from the Hornets and took over in the final minutes. She made a free throw to take the lead and then nailed a pull-up jumper to put the game away. The Knoxville, Tenn.-native also nabbed three steals in the final quarter to help Lynchburg steal the game away from R-MC. The Hornets earned their first win over the Yellowjackets since Feb. 25, 2017 in a contest featuring six lead changes and five ties.

The Hornets (12-8, 8-5 ODAC) are back in action Wednesday, Feb. 9 at Roanoke for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
