Box Score Owings Mills, Md. -- University of Lynchburg's men's lacrosse team fell behind early and couldn't recover Saturday, dropping a 17-13 decision to No. 4-ranked Christopher Newport at Stevenson University's Mustang Classic.
Brett Rogers had a hat trick and an assist for the Hornets, while Riley Mitchell totaled two goals and four assists.
CNU leapt out to a 7-2 lead after the first quarter and held control through the second, entering halftime with a 10-3 lead.
Lynchburg ripped off a 5-0 run late in the third period, sparked by Rogers' second goal, but the Captains scored with 59 seconds remaining in the third to move the lead to 14-9.
The Hornets scored four of the first five goals in the fourth, slimming the lead to 15-13 with 4:56 to play after A.J. Nieves' goal. CNU managed to score twice more in the following minute to seal the win.
Michael Kraus was great at the X for Lynchburg, winning 15 of 27 bouts and snagging a game-high 12 ground balls. Long-stick midfielder Chris Darminion had five ground balls and caused a turnover.
