Ocala, Fla. -- University of Lynchburg's equestrian team will again compete for a National Collegiate Equestrian Association single discipline championship!
The third-ranked Hornets defeated No. 2 Sewanee by a 6-2 score Friday morning to advance to Saturday's national title meet against No. 1 Sweet Briar. Lynchburg and the Vixens will begin competition at 9 a.m. at the World Equestrian Center.
Freshman Emma Schweizer led the way for the Hornets, winning points over both flat and fences in the victory.
The Hornets started off hot, sweeping all four points over fences to hop in the meet's driver's seat. Fallyn Belcastro scored a meet-best 247 points – scoring takes the five judges' scores and throws out the highest and lowest, keeping the middle three – while Jacqueline Needle and Kelley McCormick also topped the 210-point mark.
Lynchburg led 4-0 after fences, the fourth point coming from Schweizer, whose 197.5 on Chapman also won a point for the Hornets.
The Hornets took that momentum into the flat as Schweizer scored 214 on Captain to score the clinching fifth point. Taylor Herzog also won a point in the flat discipline with a team-high 222 points on Bravo for Lynchburg's sixth point of the day.
Lynchburg's victory avenged a loss to the Tigers in the Eastern College Athletic Conference tournament semifinals last month.
The Hornets will square off with Sweet Briar for the national title for the second-straight year. SBC defeated Lynchburg by a 5-3 score October 28 in Dover, Del., the rivals' only meeting this season. The Vixens won the 2021 national title over Lynchburg by a 6-2 score.
