No. 11 men's lacrosse blows by Randolph-Macon

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- Ryan Kenney scored four goals, Kyle Lewis and Brett Rogers had a goal and three assists each, and the 11th-ranked University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team celebrated Senior Night with a 17-8 win over visiting Randolph-Macon Saturday evening on Shellenberger Field.

Ian McCarthy, Riley Mitchell, Nate Shafer, and Dylan Wolfe all scored twice for the Hornets, who jumped out to an early lead and never looked back en route to the program's 32nd consecutive win over their Old Dominion Athletic Conference rivals from Ashland.

Mitchell got Lynchburg on the board in the first minute of the game, and Shafer, Lewis, Kenney, and Shafer again made it a 5-0 Lynchburg lead before the Yellow Jackets finally got on the board with 2:50 left in the first quarter.

The Lynchburg offense erupted for seven more goals in the second period to take a commanding 12-5 lead into halftime.

Four different Hornets scored in the fourth as Lynchburg extended the lead to double digits, 16-6, and Kenney put his fourth in the net with 3:25 remaining to put a bow on the win.

Michael Kraus dominated at the X, winning 18 of 29 face-offs for the Hornets, and the sophomore also snagged eight ground balls. Chris Darminio collected a career-best 11 ground balls, and Peter Robertson caused three turnovers for Lynchburg. The Hornet defense held up on three of R-MC's five man-up opportunities.

Brandon Smith had a hat trick to lead Randolph-Macon.

Prior to the game, the Hornets' men's lacrosse program celebrated its three graduate students -- A.J. Nieves, Robertson, and Riley Schmidt -- and 11 seniors -- Chris Jennings, Frank Jobko, Kenney, Tyler Kuni, Lewis, Josiah Martin, Marshall Rodegast, Rogers, Shafer, Jack Speers, and Liam Zolper.

Lynchburg (11-4, 7-1 ODAC) will play its regular-season home finale Wednesday against Bridgewater at 7 p.m. as the back end of a women's-men's doubleheader on Shellenberger Field. The program will celebrate Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night at the game.
