Box Score Lexington, Va. -- Despite 11 kills and four blocks from freshman Bree Spainhour, University of Lynchburg's volleyball team fell in straight sets Saturday morning, 25-21, 25-23, 25-22, to Old Dominion Athletic Conference rival Washington and Lee.
Lynchburg jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in the first set before the Generals found their footing, coming back to tie it at 5. W&L then assumed a 15-10 lead to force a Hornet timeout. Spainhour put down three kills in the ensuing points as Lynchburg came back to tie the set, 21-21. That's as far as the Hornets would get; Washington and Lee ended the set on a 4-0 run for the early lead.
Spainhour led the Hornets into the tight second set as well, collecting five kills while Abbi Leeper had four. The Hornets were right there at the end, tied 23-23, but the Generals claimed the final two points and a commanding two-set lead. Lynchburg fell behind early in the third but clawed back to cut it to 20-18 after a Sophia Rucker kill. The Generals responded with a 4-0 run and eventually polished off the sweep.
Libero Cassi Blackmore led the Hornets' back line with 24 digs – her eighth match over 20 digs this season – while setter Mya Green made 35 assists. Leeper put down 10 kills, and Kailey Keough had 12 digs and eight kills.
Lynchburg (6-7, 2-2 ODAC) will call an end to its season-opening, 13-match roadtrip next time out, as Randolph-Macon pays a visit to Turner Gym at 7 p.m. Wednesday for the Hornets' home-opener. Lynchburg will celebrate SAAC's CODE RED initiative and Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night at the match.
