Hot 3-point shooting pushes women's hoops past Averett

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- Macey Mullins knocked down six 3-pointers on her way to a game-high 18 points, leading University of Lynchburg's women's basketball team to a key Old Dominion Athletic Conference win, 67-54, over visiting Averett Wednesday evening.

Mullins, a freshman, was 6-for-11 from long range in the win and added four steals and three assists to her tally, while fellow freshmen Maddie Nimmo (16 points, seven assists) and Brooke Cason (15 points, 5-for-8 from 3-point range) also reached double figures for the victors. Sixty-two of the Hornets' 67 points were scored by first-years. With her 16, Nimmo made it nine straight games in double-digit scoring.

Trailing by a point midway through the first period, Lynchburg went on a 10-0 run to open up a lead by the quarter's late going. Averett rallied back, however, to hold a 33-31 halftime lead on Skylar Jones' last-second jumper.

The second half was all Hornets. Cason scored 12 of her 15 after the break, going 4-for-5 from behind the arc to help Lynchburg take control, and Nimmo made nine of her 10 free throw attempts in the final 20 minutes. Sophomore Darcy Ross also had a strong game for the Hornets, grabbing 10 rebounds and making three assists.

Elisa Harris led the Cougars with 16 points.

It was Lynchburg's third win in their last four games, helping the Hornets vault to eighth in the ODAC standings at 5-7 after starting the year 1-5 in conference play. The team's overall record sits at 6-12.

Lynchburg will take a break from conference play Saturday for a 2 p.m. tip with Mary Washington. Both the Hornets' women's and men's basketball programs will celebrate Alumni Day Saturday as well.
