Men's hoops falls at Bridgewater despite Davis' big night

Box Score

Bridgewater, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's men's basketball team got a career-high scoring output from Elijah Davis, but it wasn't enough to push the Hornets past Bridgewater in Saturday's 91-82 loss inside the Eagles' Nininger Hall.

Davis, a sophomore, poured in 21 points to lead the way for Lynchburg, going 5-for-9 from behind the 3-point line. Two more Hornets – Landon Sutton and Jayson Easton – also scored in double figures, tallying 13 and 12 points, respectively. Piercen Young chipped in eight points to go with his team-best 10 rebounds.

The Eagles led off the game on a 7-2 run and never trailed in the game, though Lynchburg cut the deficit to one possession on a half-dozen occasions. After a Sutton jumper cut the BC lead to 34-31, the hosts ended the first half on a 12-4 run to lead 46-35 at the break.

Lynchburg trimmed the lead to six early in the second, but another Eagles run, this one of the 11-3 variety, gave BC breathing room again. Bridgewater led by double digits the rest of the way to win at home against the Hornets for the first time since 2015.

The Hornets shot well from deep all afternoon, going 17-for-38 from 3-point range. The 17 made 3s were the fifth most in program history. BC's advantage came at the free-throw line, where they picked up 26 points. Lynchburg took just eight free throws, making seven of them.

The Hornets (4-10, 1-4 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) will continue league play Wednesday on the road, where they look to snap their four-game losing skid at No. 24-ranked Guilford at 7 p.m.
