Women's volleyball sweeps EMU

Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's volleyball team swept EMU behind a .241 hitting percentage as a unit Friday night.

The Hornets were stellar at the net right from the first serve. Lynchburg forced nine attack errors from the Royals in the first set and held them to a .000 hitting percentage thanks in part to four blocks. Bree Spianhour, Ava Meinhardt, Princess Salifou, and Kailey Keough all got in on at least one block assist in the first set.

Lynchburg's 25-20 victory in the first set was also fueled by six kills from Tori Williamson. She finished the night with 12 kills and a .281 hitting percentage.

In the second set, Williamson pushed her hitting percentage up to .419 at one point with nine kills on only 21 swings.

However, after leading 12-9 in the second, Lynchburg lost its lead to the Royals by the 38th point. The Royals earned a possible set point at 24-22, but the Hornets battled back to stay in it. The Hornets faced four more set points from their opponents and stayed afloat each time. Lynchburg earned its first set point of the second set at 29-28 after an attack error from the Royals and finally put the set away 32-30 after a block from Salifou and Williamson. After EMU's first set point, Lynchburg got three kills from Salifou and two from Keough to fuel the comeback.

In the third set, the Hornets faced an early deficit and trailed 20-16 late in the set. At 20-16, Lynchburg rallied to outscore the Royals 10-5 getting kills from four different players en route to a set and match victory.

Lynchburg's sweep marked the first time the two squads had gone only three sets since 2019.

The Hornets (7-8, 4-5 ODAC) are right back at it Saturday, Oct. 14 at 11 a.m. against Shenandoah.
