Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's volleyball team defeated Shenandoah Saturday afternoon.
Kailey Keough registered a career-high 17 kills, and Princess Salifou tallied a season-best 11 kills in the four-set victory. Jaina Leek also impressed with eight service aces and 24 assists.
After a back-and-forth start to the first set, Lynchburg took the lead for good after a Bree Spainhour kill tied the set 10-10 and Shenandoah ball-handling error gave Lynchburg the lead. Spainhour had three kills in that first set and finished the day with eight.
After falling down by six points early in the second set, Lynchburg rallied to take a 10-9 lead behind back-to-back kills from Ava Meinhardt. The second set remained close, but Shenandoah earned the first set point of the second set and went on to win 26-24.
Lynchburg dominated from the service line in the third set with 10 aces. Leek provided seven of them on the way to a 25-18 victory in the third.
The Hornets closed out the match in the fourth on their fourth match-point opportunity. With the match tied 26-26, Lynchburg took the lead off a ball-handling error from Shenandoah, and Salifou closed the match with her 11th kill.
Lynchburg put up 12 blocks with four assists from Salifou and Meinhardt. Cassi Blackmore led the way with 12 digs.
Lynchburg (8-8, 5-5 ODAC) takes on Mary Washington on Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 6 p.m.
