Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's volleyball team fell to Mary Washington Wednesday night.
The Eagles entered Turner Gymnasium as the No. 22 team in the country and with a 19-1 record. Despite the difference in winning percentages, the Hornets gave the Eagles a battle all night long.
The Hornets took a lead with a six-point rally early in the first set. Princess Salifou had two kills on the run, Mya Green had one, and Kailey Keough recorded another.
Lynchburg held onto its lead until the Eagles went on a four-point run to tie the match at 22. Tori Williamson put down a late kill to keep Lynchburg in it at 24-24, but the Eagles finally put the set away with two final points.
Williamson was the top offensive player for the Hornets in the match with 10 kills. It is her fourth match in double-digits this season.
Mary Washington took the second set 25-15 with a .414 hitting percentage, but the Hornets once again played with a lead in the third set.
Three different Hornets registered kills during a five-point run early on in the third and Salifou and Williamson teamed up for a block as well.
The Hornets held onto the lead late into the match until the Eagles ripped off an 11-1 run putting themselves one point from a possible-match point.
After an attack error from Mary Washington and a service ace from Cassi Blackmore, the Eagles put the Hornets away for good 25-21 closing out the match.
Lynchburg (8-9, 5-5 ODAC) takes on Virginia Wesleyan in Virginia Beach, Va. on Saturday, Oct. 21 at noon.
