Women's soccer handles Randolph

Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's soccer team scored four goals on Wednesday shutting out Randolph on Shellenberger Field.

Out-possessing the Wildcats for the majority of the game, Lynchburg tallied 23 shots with 12 on-frame.

Despite an array of early corner kicks and shots from inside the 18-yard box, the Hornets did not get on the scoreboard until the 29th minute.

Victoria Newman weaved her way through traffic to fire a low cross into the middle. Her pass found freshman midfielder Morgan Oliver who scored her first goal as a Hornet.

WildCats goalkeeper Alexis Bossi made five of her eight saves in the first half, keeping Lynchburg from extending its lead. Through the first half, the home squad took 14 shots and blanked Randolph in the category.

Soaring into the second half, Lynchburg's 15th and 16th shots of the night found the back of the net.

In the 47th minute, senior forward Meghan Lauder capitalized off a defensive miscue by Randolph to add to Lynchburg's lead. The WildCats were unable to clear a lofty ball played forward allowing Lauder to collect and calibrate in front of the keeper.

Before the crowd could even blink, Lynchburg struck again.

In the 49th minute, Claire Lloyd played a free kick quickly, sending a through ball down the touchline to Newman. In transition, the senior winger redirected to the middle of the field and found the net for Lynchburg's third goal.

The lead allowed Lynchburg to sit and focus on possession throughout the second half, though the Hornets were not finished scoring.

Freshman forward Ainsley Yates scored her third goal of the season off a corner kick from Lacey Garner. With a little push and assistance from Haleigh Casey, Yates directed her header on frame to cap Lynchburg's assertive offensive display.

Lynchburg improved its Old Dominion Athletic Conference record to 5-0-2 with three matches remaining in the regular season.

The Hornets (9-3-2, 5-0-2) play host to Shenandoah on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 4 p.m. as part of the Homecoming Weekend festivities around campus.
