Virginia Beach, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's volleyball team fell in straight sets to Va. Wesleyan Saturday afternoon.
Bree Spainhour led the Lynchburg offense with nine kills and a .444 hitting percentage. It was her highest percentage in a match where she had at least five kills. Cassi Blackmore totaled 11 digs to lead the defensive effort.
An 11-1 run for the Marlins was Lynchburg's downfall in the first set.
Spainhour got hot in the second set with five kills. Ava Meinhardt and Spainhour both secured solo blocks in the second set. Spainhour's solo came during a four-point rally that got Lynchburg within four points of the Marlins. Meinhardt and Spainhour also had kills on the run as well. However, the Marlins kept pace and took the second set 25-19.
Another big run from Va. Wesleyan all but secured the victory for the home team in the third set. Trailing at one point by 15, the Hornets showed some fight and clawed back with a 9-1 run. Tori Williamson, Regan Shananan, and Princess Salifou had kills during the comeback attempt.
The Marlins closed out the third set 25-16 to complete the sweep.
Lynchburg (8-10, 5-6 ODAC) plays its home-finale on Wednesday, Oct. 25 at 6:30 p.m. against Guilford.
