Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's soccer team defeated Guilford 2-0 Saturday night as the Hornets celebrated their Homecoming, Senior Night, and CODE RED.
The men's soccer class featuring Enrique Hernandez, Josh Auger, Manzi Shalita, Zach Whelan, and Josiah McCaskill have won 46 matches over the past four seasons including two Old Dominion Athletic Conference championships in 2020 and 2021.
One of those seniors, Whelan, got the scoring started for the Hornets in a fast-paced affair. In the 25th minute, Carter Averette set up for a corner kick. Averette sent the cross in through the box to the far post. Whelan jumped to get a head on it and redirected the cross into the back of the net.
Not only did he give Lynchburg the lead, but it marked his second-straight game with a goal with his head via a set piece.
Just over five minutes later, Luke Mega found himself with the ball just inside the box. With his shoulders squared to the goal, he deked a defender and got to his left foot for the finish.
Mega notched his eighth of the season and 52nd of his career.
The fifth-year senior could have added to his total in the 35th minute when he lined up for a penalty kick, but Guilford's keeper Roman Robinson made the save.
Robinson was hard to beat all night despite the early scoring from Lynchburg. Robinson made 20 saves in all.
Lynchburg took 24 shots in the second half, but could not get past Robinson a third time. Viscuso made a solitary save in each half to preserve Lynchburg's ninth shutout.
The Hornets can clinch the regular-season title with a win over Washington and Lee on Wednesday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m.
