Rocky Mount, NC. -- The University of Lynchburg women's basketball team defeated North Carolina Wesleyan 89-59 Saturday afternoon.
Sayre Brandstatter led the way for the Hornets with 15 points off 7-10 (70%) shooting from the field. Bree Spainhour and Brooke Cason contributed 14 points each to follow up the team's historic performance from the previous game.
The Bishops began the game with a 9-0 run and led for most of the first half. The Hornets went into halftime with a one-point lead thanks to a last second layup from Brandstatter.
Lynchburg would build on its lead with a scoring surge early in the second half led by Cason, who scored her first eight points of the night early in the second half. Olivia Harris drilled three shots from behind the arc to lead the team in scoring in the third quarter. Brandstatter and Sammi Sever also contributed to Lynchburg's 32-9 run in the third quarter. The Hornets made eight of 10 shots from behind the arc in the quarter.
The Hornets began the fourth quarter outscoring NC Wesleyan 9-0. The Hornets led by as much as 35 points late in the fourth quarter. Lynchburg finished with five double-digit scorers. The Hornets shot 12-26 (46%) from behind the arc and finished with 21 assists.
The Hornets (6-6, 1-5 ODAC) will begin the new year by hosting Randolph-Macon on Wednesday, Jan. 3 at 7 p.m
