Salem, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's men's basketball team cut a double-digit deficit down to three, but the Hornets couldn't complete the comeback, falling 76-70 on the road to Old Dominion Athletic Conference rival Roanoke Wednesday night.

Trey Pittman scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds, both team-highs, in the game, while Miles Taylor added 10 points.

The Maroons wasted no time jumping to a 10-point lead, starting the game on a 15-5 run in the first 5 minutes before Lynchburg found its footing. The Hornets trailed by as many as 14 in the first period.

Roanoke pushed the lead to 17 early in the second half before the Hornets began to trim the advantage down. Pittman was 4-for-5 from the field in the second half, scoring 10 of his 14 after the break as Lynchburg made a run at the game in the late going. His layup with 1:39 to play made it a 72-67 ballgame, and Cuddah Savage scored with 1:08 on the clock to cut the lead to one possession. RC made a 3 on the following possession, however, and forced a turnover when Lynchburg got the ball back to put the game in the bag.

The Hornets (5-16, 2-10 ODAC) will take the weekend off before returning home Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. tip against Ferrum in another pivotal conference matchup.
