Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- Bree Spainhour finished a rebound short of a double-double, Olivia Harris scored a team-best 13 points, and University of Lynchburg's women's basketball team took back the Hill City Rivalry with a 55-51 road win at crosstown rival Randolph College Wednesday evening.
Spainhour collected 10 points and nine rebounds for the Hornets, while Harris added four rebounds, three steals, and two assists to her stat line in the upset. Ashley Vandergrift scored eight points off the bench for Lynchburg. The victory avenged Lynchburg's home loss to the WildCats Nov. 30.
On Wednesday, the two teams played a tightly contested first half with neither team leading by more than five in the opening 20 minutes. Randolph threatened to gain some breathing room late in the second quarter, but the Hornets scored seven second-chance points in the final 3 minutes of the half to keep the deficit at 25-21 midway through. Lynchburg had 14 offensive rebounds in the game.
Lynchburg caught fire from 3-point territory in the second half. The Hornets shot 6-for-13 from deep in the third and fourth quarters. The last of those 3s was one of the biggest; with 5:18 remaining, Harris knocked down a triple after Macey Mullins' offensive rebound gave the Hornets a second chance, putting Lynchburg ahead, 45-43.
The WildCats tied the game on the next possession, but Lynchburg retook the lead, this time for good, on a Sarah Johnson free throw with 4:19 left in the game. Harris then scored a couple free throws and a layup to make it a five-point Hornet advantage, and Lynchburg slowed down the pace to make the advantage last. A key bucket by Spainhour in the post and clutch free throws from Maddie Nimmo helped wrap up the win.
Kylie Stark led the way for Randolph with 14 points, and Abbie Baker had 12 points and seven rebounds.
Lynchburg has won 22 of the last 23 meetings between the two crosstown rivals and 10 straight on the road. The Hornets will look to extend their ODAC win streak to three Saturday with a trip to Eastern Mennonite for a 2 p.m. tip. The Hornets can wrap up a spot in this season's conference tournament with a victory.
