Fitch leads men's basketball past Ferrum

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- Alex Fitch scored 20 of his team-high 23 points after halftime to help University of Lynchburg's men's basketball team to an 88-78 Old Dominion Athletic Conference win over visiting Ferrum Wednesday evening.

Fitch, who added 11 rebounds for his first-career double-double – was one of four Hornets to top the 10-point threshold on the night. Trey Pittman scored 16 off the bench for Lynchburg, and Miles Taylor and Jordan Parham had 10 points apiece. Taylor added six boards and four assists to his line.

Lynchburg began the game as hot as it's been all season from the field. The Hornets shot over 50 percent (17-for-33) in the first half, including a 6-for-14 mark from 3-point territory, on their way to a 44-29 halftime lead.

But after Kavon James and Fitch hit back-to-back 3s to open the second half, FC began to climb back into the game. A 10-0 run midway through the period brought the Panthers within nine with 9:27 to play, but the Hornets had a response. Jalen Hargrove drew a foul on Lynchburg's next possession and made both free throws, sparking an 8-0 Hornet run.

The Panthers hung around, though, buoyed by hot shooting from Deshone Hicks, who dumped in a game-high 40 points on his career night. FC had the Lynchburg lead down to 10 in the final 2 minutes, but the Hornets came up with some big clock-eating possessions down the stretch to fight off any further runs.

Fitch was 12-for-13 from the free-throw line, all coming in the second half. The Hornets also made the most of their eight offensive rebounds, totaling 18 second-chance points in the contest.

Lynchburg (6-16, 3-10 ODAC) will continue to fight for a spot in the upcoming ODAC tournament when No. 14 Guilford pays a visit to Turner Gym for a 2 p.m. tip. The Hornets will celebrate Senior Day prior to the game.
