Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team claimed the first seed in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament in style Saturday with a lopsided win over Hampden-Sydney.
The 13th-ranked Hornets defeated the Tigers 14-2. Hampden-Sydney arrived to Shellenberger Field as the first-place team in the ODAC and left as co-champions for the regular season. However, since both teams finished with an 8-1 record, Lynchburg gained the tiebreaker with the head-to-head matchup and will host throughout the playoffs.
Grant Voigt scored Lynchburg's first goal of the game, and the Hornets were well on their way to tying the program record of conference wins.
To build a 4-0 lead, Luke Meadows scored his first-collegiate goal, Spencer Vandenberg scored, and Finn Schmidt scored his first of four goals.
Riley Hastings also netted four goals in the dominating win as the Hornets imposed their will on the Tigers. Henri Marindin assisted on one of Hastings' four scores.
Not to be overshadowed by the scoring onslaught, Tyler Hadley made 13 saves to dampen any hopes of a Tiger comeback.
He did not face a shot in the third quarter as Lynchburg built a 12-1 lead with 15 minutes to play.
Vandenberg and Ethan Cotter scored in the fourth as the Hornets coasted to a 14-2 victory.
Before the game, Lynchburg celebrated its senior class of 16 seniors. That group has won 47 games, two ODAC trophies, and made two trips to the NCAA tournament.
The Hornets (12-5, 8-1 ODAC) begin their quest for a third-straight conference title in the semifinals on Thursday, May 8 on Shellenberger Field.
