Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg Field Hockey team saw nine different players score a goal and all three goalkeepers record a save in a 9-1 non-conference victory over visiting Kenyon Saturday afternoon.
Aaryn Boatwright got the scoring going just over three minutes into the game, tapping in her team-high fifth goal of the season off a Marlou Wendriks assist to give Lynchburg a lead it would never surrender over the final 57 minutes.
The 24th-ranked Hornets found the back of the cage for the second time on the day as time expired on the opening frame when Meike Ottjes scored an unassisted goal for her first score of the season.
Marlou Wendriks opened a season-best quarter for goal scoring with her third goal of the year four minutes into the second.
Wendriks, who led the Hornets in scoring in 2022 with 17 scores, recorded her team-high fourth point of the day a few moments later when she assisted on the first career goal for freshman Khanyisile Mzizi.
Mzizi, a member of the U21 field hockey national team for her native Zimbabwe, had been active all around the field in the first four games of the season before recording a season-high three points on the day.
Lynchburg reset its season-high for goals with just under five minutes remaining in the second when Brooke Hyland converted an Allie Freeman assist into a score to put Lynchburg up 5-0.
Freeman, a freshman defender, sent a feed from just past midfield that was tapped in by Hyland for her first goal of the season.
Lynchburg took a 6-0 advantage in a second quarter that ultimately put the game away when Jenna Tangires captured her first goal of the year on a helper from Brooke Hyland.
The score was the first for Tangires since the 2021 campaign and lifted Hyland to a career-high three points in a play set up between a pair of seniors.
Lynchburg took a 25-0 shooting lead into the half, while also generating five penalty corners and recording just seven fouls.Â
The third quarter saw Lynchburg push their advantage to seven with a Madison Mark goal off a feed from Sydney Rowe.
Mark had several plays drawn up her way in the first half before pushing one into the back of the cage for her first goal of the season.
Keeping it within the family, Lauren Mark picked up her second score of the year at the end of the quarter off the sixth assisted goal of the day for Lynchburg with the pass coming from Mzizi.
Kayla Brady was tested in goal for the first time of the day in the frame, recording her lone save on as many shots faced before having her day come to an end in the 41st minute.
Shay Schoones made her second appearance of the season, making a save of her own 20 seconds into the final quarter before she was replaced by Samira Gharavi in the 50th minute.
It was the first career save for Schoones, who has now played 20 minutes of game time in her freshman campaign.
Lisanne Van Der Waajj rounded out the scoring for Lynchburg three minutes into the final period, officially making it nine goals from nine different scorers on the day as she became the sixth Hornet to score their first goal of the season.
Van Der Waajj joined classmate Mzizi as the pair of Hornets to record their first career goals.
Gharavi made three saves the rest of the way in the cage before Kenyon got on the board with less than two minutes remaining to stop Lynchburg from recording its second straight shutout.
In all, Lynchburg outshot Kenyon 36-9 on the afternoon while sporting a 22-7 shot on goal advantage.
Lynchburg (4-1) will complete a four-game homestand Thursday, September 21 when they open up ODAC play against Randolph-Macon at 7 p.m. on Shellenberger Field.
