Newport News, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's soccer team fell to Christopher Newport 2-1 on Saturday night.
Pat Figaro scored the lone Lynchburg goal in the narrow defeat to the Captains.
The Hornets owned the early scoring chances throughout the first 20 minutes of play. Manzi Shalita took Lynchburg's fourth shot of the evening earning the opportunity on a pass from Luke Mega. CNU's goalkeeper Hayden Dewey made the initial save, but Figaro converted on the rebound giving Lynchburg a 1-0 lead and Mega and Shalita assists in the 22nd minute.
Neither team took a shot for the next 10 minutes until the Captains scored the equalizer in the 36th minute. It was the first shot sophomore goalkeeper Thomas Viscuso faced all evening.
After the goal from CNU's Mason Field, both teams went quiet once more into the intermission.
The Hornets reignited their pressure after play resumed in the second half. Josh Auger, Shalita, and Seth Dale all put shots on frame by the 55th minute, and the Hornets earned two corner kicks.
An own goal spoiled Lynchburg's evening in the 76th minute even though the Hornets outshot CNU 5-3 in the second half.
Lynchburg never recovered from their miscue, and the Captains held on for the 2-1 win.
The Hornets (1-1) play Covenant on a neutral field in Salem, Va. on Friday, Sept. 8 at 5 p.m.
