Game Recap: Field Hockey |

No. 25 field hockey upsets No. 7 York (Pa.)

Sweet Briar, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg field hockey team upset No. 7 York (Pa.) behind goals from Anna Dorrestijn and Marlou Wendriks

Kayla Brady made four saves as Lynchburg shut out York for its third shutout of the season.

Lynchburg earned its first ranked-win of the season. The Hornets beat four ranked opponents in 2022 including No. 3 Johns Hopkins on Sept. 17, 2022.

Playing on the water-based turf at Sweet Briar College, Lynchburg's speed was on display from the first touch. However, the Spartans lined up the first shot on target, but Brady turned it away.

Lynchburg did not attempt a shot until the second quarter when Olivia Van Metre tested York's goalie Belle Fields.

In the 17th minute, the Hornets earned their first penalty corner of the game. Dorrestijn inserted it and wound up scoring on the other end of the play. Renee Van Thiel took the initial shot, Khanyisile Mzizi deflected it, and Dorrestijn deflected it into the back of the cage.

Coming into Saturday, the SPpartans were undefeated and had only allowed three goals through six games.

The Hornets doubled their lead in the second half thanks to a missile of a shot from Wendriks that tested the integrity of the cage's netting. Her fifth goal of the season marked the first time the Spartans allowed multiple goals in a game since DeSales put two past them in the first round of the NCAA championship in 2022.

The Hornets earned four more corners in the fourth quarter but were unable to add to the two-goal lead. The Hornets outshot the Spartans 15-4 and only conceded two penalty-corner opportunities, both in the second quarter.

The No. 25-ranked Hornets (6-1, 1-0 ODAC) play their third gam ein four days on Sunday, Sept. 24 at 11 a.m. against Centre. The game will be played on another neutral-site turf, this time, at Liberty University.
