Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's volleyball team fell in straight sets against Bridgewater Tuesday evening.
The Hornets hosted the Eagles for their CODE RED match, and Turner Gymnasium was filled with fans, students, and athletes from other Lynchburg teams. The Hornets treated the crowd to a hard-fought match highlighted by a marathon-second set.
In the first, Tori Williamson put down three kills early to keep Lynchburg within striking distance of the Eagles. Her third kill drew the Hornets within one point, 7-6.
Kailey Keough had three-straight kills putting Lynchburg up 9-8 soon after. However, the Eagles used a five-point run to separate from the Hornets in the first and take the opener 25-18.
The Eagles took next two sets to close out the match, but the Hornets pushed the Eagles to their limits in the second. Trailing by two at 19-17, the Hornets ripped off six-straight points featuring kills from Ava Meinhardt and Bree Spainhour, a block from Spainhour and Princess Salifou, an ace from Meinhardt, and two additional Eagle-attack errors.
The Hornets earned possible-set points on five occasions afterwards, but the Eagles countered every time. Trailing 28-27, the Eagles scored the next three points to seal the second second set.
Williamson had two more kills in the third to get to nine on the day, but the Eagles edged out the Hornets 25-17 to steal a win on the road.
Keough tied Williamson for the team-lead in kills with nine.
Prior to the match, Lynchburg presented Mya Green with a commemorative ball celebrating her 1,500th assist. She finished the night with 20 helpers.
Lynchburg (4-7, 1-4 ODAC) hosts Hollins on Friday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m.
